THE FOLD YARD RESTORATION

The Fold Yard was originally a group of barns and outbuildings dating back to the mid-19th Century. The buildings served the former Cornborough Hall Farm and were used to house sheep and cattle during the winter months.

The barns retained many original features such as traditional roof trusses, wooden beams, ventilation slots and even chains nailed into the walls for the tethering livestock.

During the conversion into contemporary style accommodation, we were keen to retain its rustic character and charm by ‘giving the nod’ to as many of these traditional features as we could.

THE ORIGINAL FEATURES

Traditional Oak Trusses

Our exposed oak roof trusses were all handmade ‘on site’ by skilled craftsmen in the traditional style. These principal trusses are joined by ‘purlin’ beams which are again exposed to view.

Handcrafted Peg Joints

Traditional joinery techniques were employed in the making of the trusses, including using hand carved and tapered wooden pegs to secure the mortise and tenon joints.

Ventilation Slots

The original building had open ventilation slots to air the barn. We thought this might prove a touch chilly for our guests, so we have reproduced them using glazed slots instead.

Cobbled Courtyard

During the conversion works we uncovered evidence of a cobbled courtyard buried under the foldyard. We have re-used many of these original cobblestones in the front courtyard and rear path to the cottage.

Spectacular Views

This is the view from the cottage looking across the Vale of York. In the foreground you can see the white fenced gallops where you might glimpse young racehorses from nearby Dudley Hill Racing being put through their paces.
